SSL Certificate

Situation:

SSL Certificates are what enable websites to move from HTTP to HTTPS, which is more secure.

This tutorial will demonstrate how to purchase and install an SSL certificate from a reputable, for-profit Certificate Authority (CA).

Solution:

SSL certificates give web servers the ability to encrypt their traffic and also provide a way to verify server identities for site visitors.

The main advantage of using an SSL certificate that you have purchased from a reputable CA over one that you have self-signed is that your site's visitors won't see a frightening warning about not being able to confirm the identity of your site.

Prerequisites

Before attempting to obtain an SSL certificate from a commercial CA, there are a few prerequisites that you should make sure of. This section will cover the requirements that the majority of CAs will have in order to issue you an SSL certificate.

Money

It is necessary to pay for SSL certificates that are issued by commercial CAs. Self-signed or StartSSL certificates are free substitutes. Self-signed certificates, however, cannot be used for commercial purposes and are not trusted by any software.

Registered Domain Name

The registered domain name you want to use the SSL certificate with must be under your control or ownership prior to purchasing an SSL certificate. You can register a domain name with us if you don't already have one.

Domain Validation Rights

You must have access to one of the email addresses listed on your domain's WHOIS record or to an "admin type" email address at the domain itself in order to complete the basic domain validation process. A validation email is typically sent to one of the addresses listed on a domain's WHOIS record or to a generic admin email address on the domain itself by certificate authorities that issue SSL certificates to verify domain control.

Alternative domain validation techniques, like DNS- or HTTP-based validation, are offered by some CAs, but they are not covered in this manual.

If you want an Organization Validation (OV) or Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificate, you must also give the CA documentation that proves the owner of the website is who they say they are legally.

Technical Details

Once you have your SSL certificate, you can install it using Netspaceindia depending on the type of service you are using.
